Major Events of the Revoulotion

Congress appointed George Washington as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. At first, the revolution did not go well for the patriots. In August 1776, the British forced Washington to retreat at the Battle of Long Island. The British victory meant that they gained control of New York City. In late 1776 and early 1777, however, Washington reversed a string of losses when he won the Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton.
